3 Days 2 Nights in Copenhagen with Kids: Cycling, Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Perks & Local Adventures

Planning a 3 days 2 nights Copenhagen itinerary with kids? Here’s exactly how we did it — combining smart hotel strategy, Marriott Bonvoy Platinum benefits, bike culture, and family-friendly experiences in one of Europe’s most livable cities.

As a family of four based in Riga, we love slow, immersive city breaks — and Copenhagen delivered big time.

Where We Stayed: Copenhagen Marriott Hotel (And How We Upgraded for Free)

We stayed at Copenhagen Marriott Hotel, and this stay turned out to be a strategic win.

💡 How We Fit 4 People in a Room That Only Allows 3

We originally booked a Double Room, which officially accommodates only 3 guests. As a Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite member, we had 5 Nightly Upgrade Awards (NUA) available.

My plan was simple:

  • Apply the NUA upgrade request.

  • If the suite upgrade didn’t clear → cancel and switch to a cheaper Bonvoy property that allows 4 guests.

The upgrade cleared.

We were upgraded to a suite that comfortably fits 4, at no extra cost.

Platinum Elite Perks We Enjoyed:

  • Complimentary suite upgrade (via NUA)

  • Executive Lounge access

  • Complimentary breakfast

  • Late check-out flexibility

  • Priority check-in

We arrived at 2PM and were able to check in immediately. First stop? Executive Lounge for light snacks and drinks before heading out.

Day 1: Nyhavn, Strøget & First Taste of Copenhagen

After settling in, we rented bikes using Bolt and Donkey Republic and cycled towards:

  • Nyhavn – the iconic colourful waterfront.

Managing Hungry Kids in Copenhagen (And Why Flexibility Wins)

After walking past Nyhavn and heading towards Strøget, we planned to continue all the way to Tivoli Food Hall for dinner.

But reality check.

The kids were hungry. And when kids are hungry on travel days?
Everything feels like a very long walk.

They started fussing about how far Tivoli was, how tired they were, and how they couldn’t walk anymore.

Instead of pushing through and risking a full meltdown, we changed strategy.

The Smart Parent Move: Feed First, Walk Later

We compromised.

We let them grab their quick comfort meal (yes, their beloved “Mac”) nearby first — something familiar and fast. Once their hunger was sorted, moods shifted instantly.

Then we continued our original plan:
Strøget → Tivoli Food Hall → Evening stroll.

Night capture of Strøget

This small adjustment saved the evening.

Even better — because they were already full by the time we reached Tivoli, we didn’t need to buy full meals for them again at Tivoli Food Hall. That meant:

  • Less pressure to find “kid-friendly” food

  • Lower dinner cost

  • More relaxed parents

Sometimes feeding kids early is not “ruining the dining plan” — it’s protecting it.

Dinner at Tivoli Food Hall

When we finally arrived at Tivoli Food Hall, it was absolutely worth it.

Located right next to Tivoli Gardens, this modern food hall is perfect for families because:

  • Huge variety of cuisines

  • Casual seating

  • Fast service

  • Something for picky eaters and food lovers alike

We went for:

  • Wagyu burger from Cocks & Cows — rich, juicy, indulgent.

  • Pasta from La Baracca — simple, comforting, and done well.

The food hall is spacious and casual, making it ideal for families — but honestly, arriving with full kids made the whole experience smoother.

No rush. No complaints. Just good food.

Day 2: Cycling Copenhagen in a Light Drizzle 🚲

It was a drizzling morning.

Not heavy rain.
Just that soft, persistent Copenhagen mist.

And despite the grey skies, we decided to go ahead with our cycling plan anyway.

Because honestly? That’s what locals do.

Copenhagen’s cycling culture doesn’t stop for light rain — and neither did we.

We rented directly from Copenhagen Marriott Hotel:

  • Cargo bike (full day): 500 DKK

  • Adult bike: 150 DKK (4 hours)

  • Kid bike: 150 DKK (4 hours)

The city remains incredibly bike-friendly even on wet days:

  • Dedicated cycling lanes

  • Clear road markings

  • Respectful drivers

  • Smooth infrastructure

What We Learned About Cycling Copenhagen with Kids in Drizzly Weather

At first, the light drizzle felt manageable.

The kids were wearing their winter jackets, which we thought would keep them warm enough.

But here’s what happens with light rain over several hours:

  • Jackets get slightly damp.

  • The cold slowly seeps in.

  • Kids start feeling uncomfortable.

It wasn’t dramatic — just that slow, creeping chill from slightly wet fabric.

By the third hour, they were feeling a bit cold.

What I Would Do Differently
✔ Lightweight waterproof rain jackets
✔ Layered clothing underneath
✔ Possibly thin gloves for colder months

Even with the drizzle, cycling through:

Next time, I would pack:

A proper waterproof outer layer would have kept them dry and comfortable for longer, instead of relying on winter jackets that absorb moisture.

If you’re planning a Copenhagen cycling itinerary with kids, especially outside summer, this small packing tweak makes a big difference.

And honestly?

  • Bryggebroen

  • Freetown Christiania

  • Nyhavn

  • Amalienborg Palace

  • Kastellet

  • The Little Mermaid

still felt magical.

The drizzle actually made the city feel quieter and more local — fewer crowds, softer light, and that cozy Nordic atmosphere.

A Must-Stop in Copenhagen: Juno Bakery & The Famous Cardamom Bun

No cycling loop in Copenhagen is complete without stopping at Juno the Bakery.

Tucked in the Østerbro neighbourhood, Juno is often listed among the best bakeries in Copenhagen — and for good reason.

The Cardamom Bun That Started It All

Their cardamom bun (kardemummabullar) is legendary.

Unlike a typical cinnamon roll, the cardamom bun is:

  • Less sweet

  • Deeply aromatic

  • Slightly crisp on the outside

  • Soft, buttery and layered inside

The spice is warm but not overpowering — fragrant, almost floral. It feels very Nordic. Comforting but refined.

Fresh out of the oven, the sugar crust gives a light crunch before you reach the soft, laminated layers inside. It’s simple, but done exceptionally well.

If you're planning 3 days in Copenhagen, this is one food experience you should intentionally include in your itinerary.

The Cargo Bike Incident (Real-Life Family Travel Moment)

And then… adventure struck.

The cargo bike’s back tire burst.

We called the hotel immediately. Their response?
Simply leave the cargo bike there. They would arrange pickup — and waive the rental cost.

Impressive service.

Now we had a logistics challenge:

  • 2 bikes left.

  • 4 people.

The boys cycled back (Google Maps said 20 minutes… it took them 40). They crossed multiple high-traffic areas — quite the story for them.

The girls took the train:

  • From Nordhavn to København H

  • 24 DKK via the Rejsebillet app

  • Simple and efficient

Copenhagen’s public transport system is seamless.

Ice Cream Reward & Exploring Meatpacking District

To reward my daughter for giving up her bike ride, we headed to Ismageriet Kødbyen.

Absolutely worth it.

Located in Kødbyen, this former industrial meatpacking area has transformed into one of Copenhagen’s trendiest neighborhoods.

Why Visit Kødbyen?

  • Creative dining scene

  • Industrial-chic architecture

  • Art galleries

  • Casual local vibe

  • Less touristy than central Copenhagen

It’s raw, edgy, and contrasts beautifully with Nyhavn’s postcard perfection.

After a short stroll, we headed back to the Executive Lounge for a simple dinner and an early rest.

Why Copenhagen Is Perfect for a Short Family Trip

If you’re planning a family city break in Europe, Copenhagen is ideal because:

✔ Compact and walkable
✔ World-class cycling infrastructure
✔ Clean and safe
✔ Efficient public transport
✔ Incredible food scene
✔ Family-friendly atmosphere

Even in just 3 days 2 nights, you can experience:

  • Royal landmarks

  • Canal views

  • Local neighborhoods

  • Danish pastries

  • Bike culture

Final Thoughts: Is 3 Days in Copenhagen Enough?

Yes — if you plan smartly.

Our biggest tip:

  • Use hotel elite perks strategically.

  • Cycle the city.

  • Leave room for unexpected adventures.

  • Embrace the local rhythm.

Copenhagen is not about rushing through attractions. It’s about experiencing lifestyle.

And for 3 days, we lived like locals.
